The Catalonian Parliament has just adopted by a wide margin, and against all odds, the ban on bullfighting in Catalonia.
The proposal has gained followers in the course of months beetwen the Catalan parliaments. And finally, it was approved with 68 votes in favor and 55 against: PSC and CIU had given their politicians freedom to vote, while the PP and “Ciutadans pel camvi” were strongly opposed. ERC and IU clearly voted in favor.
The ban still has to go a long way to become effective. The PP has announced, not surprisingly, that they will make every effort in Congress and the Senate to overturn the law, and they wouldn’t discard bringing the matter to The Constitutional Court.
The anti-bullfighting protesters, some smeared with red ink, shouted slogans against bullfighting. A “Prou” platform spokesman said: “This isn’t the end, this is a litle step to the total abolition of all forms of torture suffered by animals.”
And from this blog we add to these words. We hope that the day comes in which any celebration in which we will make a show with the suffering, torture and death of an animal disappears. We still have long way to go, but today is certainly a big step in the right direction.
